Consumer Alert: What You Need to Know About Snoozy ‘Vegan Silk’

The Mulberry Park Silks team has received several inquiries about the Snoozy Skin Savior™ pillowcase, a eucalyptus fabric pillowcase that positions itself as "vegan silk." (Spoiler: there is no such thing as "vegan silk"). This article will help demystify this confusing marketing message and explain the differences between Snoozy and Mulberry Park Silks.

Inside this Article:

The Mulberry Park Silks team is committed to delivering the information you need to be a smart silk shopper. That's why we occasionally devote this space to addressing a concern or misperception about silk terminology, silk products, or the silk industry. For example: a few months ago, we published a blog debunking the term "vegan silk" which is widely used to describe soft, smooth fabric woven from plants such as bamboo or eucalyptus. We explained that "vegan silk" is a misnomer; although it has a sateen weave and a supple feel, these "vegan silks" are not real silk at all. Only silk fabric that is made from fibers from the cocoon of a silkworm can be considered genuine silk.

Today we're shedding light on a related topic. In recent weeks, our team has fielded a few questions about the "Skin Savior" pillowcase from a brand called Snoozy. This product is marketed as "vegan silk," a fabric that claims to deliver the same benefits as genuine silk at half the price. Snoozy pillowcases are not silk at all; they are made from eucalyptus, a fine fabric in its own right but definitely not genuine silk.

At Mulberry Park Silks, we pride ourselves on the quality of our silk; the transparency of our communications; and the integrity of our company. We think our clients deserve to know exactly what they are purchasing and the value they are receiving when they buy a silk pillowcase or a silk sheet set. That's why we're taking a close look at the claims Snoozy makes as well as their corporate history. Read on for some important facts about the claims Snoozy makes and the company itself.

Snoozy "Vegan Silk" Pillowcases and Sheets: Plant-Based Eucalyptus (Not Genuine Silk)

Although Snoozy refers to its products as "vegan silk," that term is a misnomer. Snoozy pillowcases are made from the wood pulp fiber of eucalyptus trees. In the textile industry, eucalyptus fabric is known as lyocell and is often sold under the brand name TENCEL™. Eucalyptus fabric has a smooth texture (similar to that of cotton sateen) and an impressive list of benefits such as breathability, sustainability, and hypoallergenic properties (similar to bamboo sheets). Most importantly, it is NOT silk.

Unfortunately, Snoozy uses the following misleading language on its FAQ page:

Our mulberry silk products are made from 22-momme, 100% Mulberry silk (6A, the highest possible grading). Our mulberry silk is treated with antibacterial silver ions, reducing bacteria by 99.7%. - Snoozysleeps.com

We find this deeply puzzling. Why would Snoozy - a brand known for its pillowcases and bedding made from plant-based eucalyptus - misrepresent its products as silk? Moreover, the claim of 22-momme is misleading; only genuine silk is measured using momme, which indicates the weight and quality of the fabric. To add to the confusion, another part of Snoozy's website mentions the fabric as having a 300 thread count. This is perplexing because thread count is a measure typically used for cotton and other woven fabrics, not for true silk or eucalyptus-based materials. Using a thread count measurement in this context can mislead customers who are not familiar with the term momme into thinking they are purchasing high-end silk, which further blurs the line between accurate representation and marketing misdirection.

The Truth about Mulberry Silk Fabric

Model on sage silk sheets

Genuine silk is a protein-based fabric made from the cocoon of the Bombyx mori moth (commonly called a silkworm). Mulberry silk comes from silkworms that are fed a diet exclusively of mulberry leaves; it is the longest, strongest, and softest silk. All Mulberry Park Silks products are made from pure mulberry silk of the highest grade, 6A. Our silk bed linens and accessories come in three momme weights: 19, 22, and 30. (Note: genuine silk should ALWAYS have the momme weight listed on the label). Our silk is NOT treated with silver ions and it does not need to be (read on to learn why).

Snoozy Promotes Antibacterial Properties of Pillows (With a Catch)

One of Snoozy's main marketing messages is that it fights acne and promotes "clearer skin" because it is infused with silver ions that keep the fabric clean. Infusing fabric with silver to boost its antibacterial properties is a trend that has been observed throughout the textile industry for nearly a decade. While this claim makes sense in theory, Snoozy notes that the antimicrobial properties of the silver ions in their bedding will gradually decline after 18 months. Snoozy also touts the notion that those silver ions mean that their pillowcases need to be washed less frequently, a claim that sounds quite dubious.

Laundry experts agree:

"The point of using silver ions, or any antimicrobial treatment, is to reduce the build-up of bacteria on fabric," said Tom Ceconi, CEO at Heritage Park Laundry Essentials. "Nevertheless, these linens should be laundered at regular intervals to maintain cleanliness and hygiene."

The Truth about Mulberry Silk and Antibacterial Properties

Silk Cocoons in their raw form

Pure mulberry silk is naturally hygienic. It is made from the pure, protective cocoon of the silkworm, and will resist mold, dust mites, and bacteria. Our silk can easily be washed by hand or in your machine.

Snoozy Claims to Be Hypoallergenic, Breathable, and Temperature Regulating (So Is Genuine Silk)

Snoozy maintains that its pillowcases are hypoallergenic, breathable, and temperature-regulating. The good news is, this is true. It is also NOT news. We mentioned earlier that eucalyptus fabric has some wonderful properties; this is precisely what we are talking about. Unfortunately, Snoozy makes a hyperbolic and incorrect statement that stretches this truth:

It offers the luxurious feel of traditional silk with added breathability and cooling comfort. - Snoozysleeps.com

First, the eucalyptus fabric is smooth and soft. But it does NOT feel the same as silk, which is because silk is a natural, protein-based fabric. We also don't know what "added" breathability and cooling comfort mean.

The Truth about Mulberry Silk and Hypoallergenic, Breathable, and Cooling Properties

Raw silk threads

Pure silk is naturally hypoallergenic, non-irritating, breathable, and temperature-regulating. Once again, this goes back to the unique protein structure of the silkworm cocoon. Silk is known to repel allergens; protect sensitive skin; and help maintain a comfortable body temperature for the sleeper in any condition. Silk sheets are widely praised for their cooling properties for hot sleepers, but they also naturally insulate to keep sleepers warm in colder weather for year-round comfort.

The Feel of Snoozy: Soft, But Not Truly Silky

Bamboo Pillowcase

Snoozy pillowcases, sheets, and duvet covers are definitely soft. However, to say they are the same as genuine silk is not accurate.

"There are many lovely and luxurious eucalyptus sheets in the marketplace," said Fine Linen and Bath Associate Brand Manager, Helena Hendricks. "However, they are definitely more akin to high-quality cotton sateen as opposed to silk, which has a unique look and feel."

The Truth About the Feel of Mulberry Silk Sheets and Pillowcases

The beauty of genuine mulberry silk

For thousands of years, silk has been prized as the pinnacle of luxury. Our pure silk bed sheets deliver unparalleled softness. The charmeuse weave is soft with a unique luster on one side and a matte finish on the reverse. Night after night, luxury silk bedding delivers a sleep experience of elegance, comfort, and style that is unmatched.

Safety and Sustainability: Understanding the Claims

All eucalyptus fabric is known for being sustainable; the trees are a renewable resource that is cultivated in managed European forests. Snoozy also says that their fabric is STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified.

The Truth about Silk Safety

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 label

Mulberry Park Silks fabric is pure mulberry silk. It is natural, protein-based, and biodegradable. Mulberry silk is inherently hypoallergenic but we have taken the extra step of having our silk STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified as safe from harmful chemicals.

Snoozy Pillowcases for Hair and Beauty: Can't Compete with Silk

Snoozy promotes its antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and temperature-regulating properties. All of these are true and very beneficial. However, silk pillowcases deliver a host of benefits to hair and skin that Snoozy products simply cannot match.

The Truth About Pure Mulberry Silk and Hair, Skin, and Beauty

Model hugging real silk pillowcase

Mulberry Park Silks pillowcases are more than just antimicrobial. They help skin stay naturally hydrated and also, because of the smooth charmeuse surface, prevent sleep creases that can lead to permanent wrinkles. Similarly, our pure silk helps hair retain its natural moisture; at the same time, the friction-free surface of our silk protects hair from tangles, bedhead, breakage, and frizz. Many dermatologists as well as hair and beauty professionals recommend sleeping on pure silk for these reasons.

Snoozy Price and Shipping Costs: More than Meets the Eye

Snoozy positions its pillowcases as a "true silk substitute" with "cheaper pricing. Let's take a closer look at that. A Standard/Queen pillowcase from Snoozy measures 20" x 28"; it comes in a choice of nine colors and costs $39 with a shipping charge of $7.99 (Snoozy offers free shipping at $50+). A 19 momme Standard/Queen pillowcase from Mulberry Park Silks is just $34 and it ships for free. (Note: purchasing two Snoozy pillowcases will cause the price to drop to $29/each and shipping will be free).

Mulberry Park Silks is always transparent about the quality and pricing of our silk.

Snoozy Corporate History and Offices: Our Most Serious Concern

Snoozy is a newly arrived brand (2023). It is part of a company called Keev which identifies itself with the following:

Welcome to Keev, a digital innovator building a portfolio of cutting-edge brands across diverse sectors. Our team of 20+ talented pros blends traditional thinking with modern methods to create brands that turn visitors into customers. -Keev.co (parent company of Snoozy)

Customer service rep speaking on blue tooth device

Snoozy as one of their three current "projects," with the others being an app-based AI mental health resource and a jewelry enterprise (the link was not working at the time of this writing). It is unclear where Keev is located (the website only says they are "a company of digital innovators combining Eastern and Western strengths…"). Although Snoozy appears to have warehouses in the US, there is no physical address for either Snoozy or its parent company, Keev, on the website. There is no phone number for customer service, only an email to reach out to the "Snoozy Happiness Team."

To our eyes, this seems like Snoozy is more of a digital marketing venture than a sincere effort to produce quality bedding. Unfortunately, the popularity of silk has attracted this kind of textile carpetbagging, where teams of marketers and venture financiers jump into the business to turn a quick profit without maintaining a sincere commitment to either products or clients. (See our blog describing this concern with Blissy.)

Our Clients Also Ask These Questions

Are silk and satin the same thing?

No, satin is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum-based nylon or polyester. The synthetic fiber does not deliver the look, feel, or beauty benefits of 100 percent mulberry silk sheets.

What is a satin weave?

Satin weave is a type of weave that is shiny and supple. It is important to read content labels when purchasing silk bedding to ensure that the material you are purchasing is a genuine mulberry silk sheet, not satin sheets made from synthetic materials.

What comes in a Mulberry Park Silks sheet set?

A sheet set includes a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and one or two pillowcases depending on the size.

Can I wash my silk bed sheet set?

Yes, you can wash your Mulberry Park Silks sheets. Use an enzyme-free detergent made to clean and care for silk fiber, like Heritage Park Silk and Wool Detergent. Place items in mesh laundry bags; wash them on a delicate or silk cycle; and hang your sheets to dry indoors or outside away from direct sunlight.

How can I treat stains on my silk sheets or pillowcases?

Treat stains quickly and gently. For blood stains, rinse them quickly in cold water from the reverse side to "force" the stain out. Because silk is a natural fiber, we don't recommend using any harsh cleaning or stain removal products. However, you can spot-treat a stubborn stain with an enzyme stain remover if you test in an inconspicuous spot first.
