What is Clean Beauty?
While many personal care, skincare and beauty brands labels are embellished with words that elude to their safety and pureness, we wondered what those statements really mean and what we found is, actually very little. "Natural" and "Eco" labels may adorn numerous skincare products, but the truth behind these claims remains ambiguous. Neither the FDA nor the USDA provides strict guidelines for the term "natural," leading to concerns of "greenwashing." Moreover, definitions of what constitutes clean beauty vary greatly.
So what is clean beauty, anyway? Is it synonymous with sustainable beauty? We reached out to beauty blogger, Maria Velniceriu of https://missmv.com , who explained, “A Clean Beauty or Skincare Product typically refers to a product that is formulated with safe, non-toxic ingredients that are derived from natural sources. It should be free from potentially harmful chemicals, such as parabens, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, and artificial colors. Additionally, Clean Beauty Products are often produced through sustainable and eco-friendly practices, ensuring minimal impact on the environment.”
Why is Clean Beauty Crucial?
The critical importance of clean beauty lies in protecting our health from the hidden harms that lurk in the products we use daily. Many skincare and beauty products on the market are rife with harmful chemicals that can penetrate your skin, potentially causing an array of health issues over time. Complicating matters, the effects of these chemicals may not be immediately apparent, often leading users to underestimate their harm.
Certified cosmetologist, aesthetician, biochemist, and science team lead at OnSkin, Valerie Aparovich, cautions, "Our skin, the largest organ in our body, absorbs up to 60% of the substances applied to it, which can include harmful chemicals found in many beauty products. Therefore, it's crucial to be well-informed about product ingredients to sidestep potential skin damage, allergies, and even severe health consequences."
Beware of these harmful chemicals typically found in skincare products: Parabens, Synthetic Colors, synthetic Fragrance, Phthalates, Triclosan, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Propylene Glycol.
