Silk Pillowcase Product Review: Mulberry Park Silks vs Elle Silk

As we always say, buying a pure silk pillowcase is a wonderful idea and a wise investment in your beauty, health, and overall wellness. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase protects from hair breakage; tames tangles and bed head; helps your hair and skin retain their natural moisture; and even assists sleep wrinkle prevention. High quality silk is a natural fiber that is hypoallergenic and resists dust mites and allergens. Talk about beauty sleep! And, of course a 100 percent silk pillowcase is the ultimate indulgence; nothing else compares to the feel of sleeping on a luxurious silk pillowcase.

But not all silk is created equal! And you should never purchase a silk pillowcase or silk sheet set based on price alone.

We’ll take a deep dive into the quality, feel, features and pricing of each product and point out some very significant differences between these two pillowcases AND companies.

*Momme count is a unit of weight measurement for silk. A higher momme weight silk pillowcase or silk sheet set will have proportionately more silk in it and the individual silk fibers will be thicker. The higher the momme, the denser the silk fabric.

Elle Silk’s Standard Size 22 momme pillowcase is made from pure mulberry silk of the highest grade, 6A. It is available in 25 different colors and okay to hand or machine wash. There is no independent textile certification (see “safety” below).

Elle Silk Safety

While silk is naturally hypoallergenic, non-irritating, and resistant to mold and mites, Elle Silk does NOT appear to have engaged any independent safety rating such as OEKO-TEX®. We cannot find any language on the website or labels on the products indicating that the silk material has been tested for safety. This is a serious concern that should be given the utmost consideration.

Elle Silk sells silk sheets and duvet covers; silk pillowcases and silk shams; silk blankets; silk robes and sleepwear; silk kids’ bedding; and a limited range of silk accessories. Products are available in 22 and 25 momme weight. The company offers many personalization / customization options including printing on silk scarves; sizing choices for silk sheets; and made to order sleepwear. According to the website, Elle Silk is based in Hangzhou, China and Como, Italy. There is a blog on the website that is fairly robust, but the individual posts are awkwardly worded and read as though they have been poorly translated from another language.

The 22 momme classic pillowcase comes well-protected in a paper fabric envelope inside a plastic sleeve. It is utilitarian and fairly attractive, but not suitable for gifting as is.

Elle Silk Price

The classic 22 momme silk pillowcase in standard size is $39, which is an appealing price. However, there is a big catch. You MUST purchase TWO at a time for a total of $78. Additionally, you will pay approximately $20 to ship those pillowcases to you. Therefore, your minimum total would be around $100 for two standard pillowcases delivered. There is NO option to purchase fewer than two pillowcases. For reference, the price of a four-piece Queen silk sheet set from Elle Silk is $754 (flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two silk pillowcases).

Elle Silk Shipping

You will pay for shipping unless your order is more than $150. All items are shipped by “worldwide courier” likely from the factory in China. The website says that your product will arrive within 7 to 15 business days.

Elle Silk Customer Service

Elle Silk is based in China and Italy. Our best guess is that products are sent directly from the factory. The customer service option on the website is email only; there is NO phone number. There is also no option for ordering swatch samples of the fabric to review.

Our recommendation: Mulberry Park Silks

There are a number of good reasons to choose Mulberry Park Silks over Elle Silk pillowcases:

1. Only Mulberry Park Silk products are independently certified to be safe by OEKO-TEX®. Having your silk pillowcase and products certified by an outside lab/testing organization should be absolutely non-negotiable. Do not buy ANY silk that is not certified to be safe or non-toxic.
2. Elle Silk pricing is misleading. While a Standard Silk pillowcase is technically priced at $39, you CANNOT purchase only one. You must purchase two for $78 AND pay approximately $20 shipping.
3. When it comes to bed sheets (and of course, once you fall in love with a silk pillowcase, you will want to consider bedsheets) the price of Elle Silk escalates. In fact, a set of queen bed sheets from Elle Silk costs $116 more than queen bed sheets from Mulberry Park Silks. We think Elle Silk is using their ostensibly “low priced” pillowcases to lure customers who will then wind up paying much more for shipping and other products.
4. Elle Silk is based in China. Your products will take 15 business days to arrive (and we think that is a generous estimate given current shipping delays). Mulberry Park Silks ships your items from Connecticut in 3 to 5 days via UPS or FedEx.
5. Elle Silk is reachable for customer service only by email. Mulberry Park Silks is a U.S.-based company that you can email, chat, sms or call with any question or concern.
