Shopping for silk sheets can be overwhelming. This article streamlines the process with five factors to consider that clearly indicate quality silk sheets.

A set of pure silk sheets is a luxurious addition to any bedroom. It’s also an investment that deserves a bit of research. There are lots of options in the market, and it can be tricky to understand what to look for in terms of quality, safety, design, and more.

Silk Sheet Cheat Sheet: Five Factors to Consider

Today we’re going to narrow our focus a bit by highlighting five important factors to consider when choosing among silk sheet sets, and show you what that looks like in terms of actual comparison among sheet sets from Mulberry Park Silks and two of our worthy competitors, Elle Silk and Lily Silk.

  1. Momme weight
  2. Fabric quality
  3. Fabric safety
  4. Design details
  5. Company reputation/customer service

When we evaluate styles according to these criteria, it becomes clear that not all silk sheet sets are the same (even among high quality silk brands).Check out this blog for a detailed look at what to think about when shopping for silk sheets, and this blog for how to determine the best momme weight sheet set for you.

Comparing Mulberry Park Silks with Elle Silk and Lily Silk

Mulberry Park Silks 22 Momme Sheet set in Sage

For comparison purposes, we are evaluating our Mulberry Park Silks 22 momme silk sheet set in Queen size with 22 momme sheet sets from Elle Silk and Lily Silk. Each style includes a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. The full retail pricing for the Mulberry Park Silks 22 momme sheet set in Queen is $771. The Elle Silk set is $751 and Lily Silk is $980. Because pricing differences fluctuate with sales and promotions, we will not be focusing on price as a factor; however, it is important to acknowledge that Lily Silk retails for $200+ more than Elle Silk and Mulberry Park Silks comparable sets.

Momme Weight: Similar to Thread Count

Raw Silk on Skeins

Similar to thread count, momme (mm) is a measurement of silk weight. The higher the momme weight, the thicker and more durable the silk. Higher momme silk fabrics are also made with thicker yarn for additional softness and durability. For silk sheets, a momme weight of at least 19 momme is recommended for durability and comfort, with 22 momme sheets being the most popular (we refer to them as our “signature sheets" and make a companion silk duvet cover in 22 momme). You can learn more about momme here.

Mulberry Park Silks, Elle Silk, and Lily Silk all produce 22 momme weight sheets.

Silk Quality: An Essential Consideration

The quality of silk is determined by the type of silk used and the manufacturing process. The highest quality silk is known as mulberry silk, which is made from the cocoons of the silkworms that feed exclusively on mulberry leaves. Mulberry silk is known for its softness, durability, and natural sheen. When shopping for silk sheets, look for those made from 100% mulberry silk. Some manufacturers may blend silk with other fibers, such as polyester, to reduce costs. However, these sheets will not have the same quality or feel as pure real silk sheets. Silk fiber is also graded by number and letter, with the highest quality silk being 6A.

Mulberry Park Silks and Elle Silk make 100% mulberry silk sheets in 6A.

Lily Silk makes 100% mulberry silk sheets of unknown grade.

Silk Safety: For Your Health and Wellbeing

It is also important to consider the safety of the silk fabric in sheets you are purchasing. Some silk sheets may contain harmful chemicals or dyes that can cause skin irritation or allergies. Look for sheets that are independently certified by OEKO-TEX® or other similar organizations to ensure that they are free of harmful substances. Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® fabric has been tested against 400 chemicals and deemed safe. Learn more about Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® here.

Mulberry Park Silks and Lily Silk sheet sets are made with fabric that is Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified.

Elle Silk sheet sets do not show a fabric safety designation.

Design Details

When it comes to design details, there are a few things to look for in silk sheets. One important feature is a cuff on the silk flat sheet. A cuff is a folded over hem at the top of the sheet that adds a touch of elegance and prevents the sheet from slipping off the bed. Look for sheets with a generous cuff. Another design detail to consider is the weave of the silk. Silk can be woven in a variety of ways, including charmeuse, habotai, and crepe de chine. Charmeuse is the most common weave for silk sheets, as it is soft and lustrous. Lastly, look at the pillowcase closure—typically envelope or hidden zipper—which is a matter of personal preference.

Mulberry Park Silks sheets are a smooth texture charmeuse weave with a stylish cuff on the flat sheet and envelope closure pillowcases.

Elle Silk and Lily Silk are charmeuse weave with envelope closure but NO CUFF on the flat sheet, just a plain hem.

Caring for Your Mulberry Park Silks Sheets

Model Smells Magnolia Detergent by Heritage Park Laundry Essentials

Mulberry Park Silks sheets can be easily washed at home in your washing machine with no need for dry cleaning. Because they are natural silk, they require a bit of extra care. Use a gentle detergent made for washing silk bedding and other natural fibers like Heritage Park Silk and Wool Laundry Detergent. We recommend using fine mesh laundry bags to protect your silk in the machine; put a silk fitted sheet in one bag, the silk flat sheet in another, and a silk pillow case in with each. Wash on a gentle or silk cycle and hang your silk bed sheet set to dry indoors or outside away from direct sunlight which can cause the color to fade. Never put silk sheets in the dryer or use bleach or fabric softener. Learn more about washing your silk sheets here.
