Luxury Living: The Appeal of Silk in Home Décor

This article offers a glimpse into why silk has always been such a very special fabric in the world of luxury products and home décor.

Luxury is a concept that transcends any material. Even as a leading retailer of fine silk bedding and accessories, we at Mulberry Park Silks maintain that luxury is better defined as an experience, a feeling, and an aesthetic. That said, we believe silk is the perfect embodiment of this concept, particularly in your home.

When it comes to home décor, your choice of materials plays a pivotal role in creating the ambiance of opulence and comfort that is at the heart of luxury. Silk is a favorite fabric that does exactly that. Known for its softness, sheen, and timeless appeal, silk has been a symbol of luxury for centuries, making it one of the most enduring luxury goods.

Let’s take a moment to explore the enduring allure of silk in home décor in the luxury market, including its history; tips for decorating with silk; and guidelines for maintaining the luxurious look of this exquisite fabric.

The History of Silk in Luxury Home Decor

Silk, a natural fiber spun by silkworms, has a rich history that dates back more than 4,000 years to ancient China, where it was reserved exclusively for royalty. Its rarity and luxurious texture made it a status symbol, indicating wealth, elegance, and sophistication. Desire for silk actually drove exploration and opened trade routes from Europe into Asia, known as the fabled Silk Road. Learn more about the history of silk here.

As the popularity of silk spread across the world over centuries, silk fabric became synonymous with high-end fashion and, of course, luxurious home décor. In the realm of home decor, silk offers a tactile experience unlike any other. Its smooth surface and subtle sheen add a touch of glamor to any space. Silk fabric instantly elevates the ambiance of any space, making the room feel more lavish and inviting. The natural luster of silk reflects light beautifully, creating a soft, glowing effect that enhances the overall atmosphere of opulence. You can see this effect in silk draperies, upholstery, throw pillows, and—most of all—in luxurious silk bedding.

Silk: Extraordinary Qualities for Bedding Bliss

One of the most indulgent ways to incorporate silk into your home décor is through silk bedding. The sensation of slipping into a bed adorned with silk sheets is unparalleled. The smoothness of silk against your skin is not only incredibly comfortable but also contributes to a restful night's sleep, enhancing the feeling of luxury in your everyday life. Silk—a natural, protein-based fiber—also has special properties that benefit your hair, skin, and overall health:

As with most fine luxury goods, with silk bedding, you get what you pay for. Silk bedding has grown in popularity and there are a lot of poor-quality silk or even satin sheets being falsely advertised as genuine luxury items. At Mulberry Park Silks, we say that high quality silk sheets are an investment, but luxury consumers need not overpay.

Here are a few tips from our design team to ensure you get the best value for your money:

Read the product description or label carefully. Buy only 100 percent pure mulberry silk in Grade 6A, which is the highest on the market (all of our products are 100% pure mulberry silk in Grade 6A).
All silk will be labeled with its weight, measured in momme. Our silk sheets range from 19 to 30 momme, with 22 momme silk sheets and pillowcases being our most popular and versatile weight. Learn more about momme in silk here . If the price is “too good to be true,” it is likely not genuine silk.
Buy from a reputable silk brand that is transparent about their silk and its pricing.

At Mulberry Park Silks, we are proud of our luxurious silk bedding collections. We offer a range of sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and more in a stylish array of colors for maximum design flexibility. Our silk bedding is made for dreaming—so we welcome the consumer to get inspired. Whether you choose soft pastels, deep jewel tones, or a fanciful combination, our silk bedding will add depth, richness, and beauty to your bedroom decor.

Mulberry Park Silks Bedding: The Ultimate Luxury and Easy to Care For

Silk does require a bit of extra care. The good news is that our silk bedding is washable by hand or machine. Make your silk last to give you comfort and pleasure with these cleaning tips:

Woman Washing her Silk
  1. Wash your silk in a silk-only load, on a gentle cycle, using a concentrated detergent made for silk and other natural fibers. We like Heritage Park Silk and Wool Detergent.
  2. Place silk items in a fine mesh bag to protect them from snags and burrs inside the machine.
  3. Never use fabric softener or bleach on silk.
  4. Never put silk sheets and bedding into the dryer.
  5. Hang your silk to dry, indoors or outside, away from direct sunlight, which can cause it to fade.

You can learn more about how to wash silk sheets here. Your silk bedding can also be ironed but does not need to be. We recommend putting the bedding on while slightly damp and smoothing to remove wrinkles. If you choose to iron your silk sheets, carefully follow these instructions.

Learn to tell the difference between silk and satin! Silk is a pure, protein-based material with a soft luster. Satin is made from petroleum-based rayon or nylon and does not deliver the benefits of silk. This blog can help you learn to tell silk and satin apart .
Mulberry Park Silks is based in the USA, with headquarters, warehouse, and customer service offices located in Branford, CT. We are here to answer any questions via email or telephone (most silk companies are located offshore with only email customer service available).
Silk is naturally hypoallergenic, but you should also look for independent safety certifications. All Mulberry Park Silks sheets are certified OEKO-TEX® Standard 100  safe from harmful chemicals. Learn more about OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 here.
